Vice President for Academics, Dan Kinney

UUP has always been a strong advocate for SUNY, its faculty, staff, and students. During the past few years, UUP has successfully worked to increase funding in the Benefits Trust Fund and enhance benefits, stop a proposal to privatized SUNY teaching hospitals, obtain equity for members in the Optional Retirement Program (ORP), pass legislation allowing contingent faculty to collect unemployment insurance over summer and winter breaks, prohibit a reduction in health benefits for SUNY retirees, and prevent the furloughing of SUNY employees. UUP and its efforts on behalf of SUNY and its faculty are made stronger by the participation of our members. As one of the largest chapters in UUP, our chapter could have significant influence if we had more members, especially academics, participating at the chapter and statewide levels. There are many opportunities for members to help shape the future direction of our chapter and UUP. The Academic Council provides Stony Brook academics with a venue for discussing faculty concerns and higher education topics. The negotiations for a new contract will be an important topic this year. All academics who are UUP members are welcome to participate in the informal council meetings. Meetings are usually on the first Wednesday of each month at noon. Lunch is provided by UUP. New faculty, in particular, can benefit from the knowledge and experience of council members. The Academic Council also sponsors Front Page Discussions that showcase the work of our chapter's members or feature talks by authors and visiting scholars. Council meetings and Front Page Discussions are listed on the chapter Web site. Anyone interested in being placed on the mailing list for the Academic Council should feel free to contact me. Please consider participating in the informal meetings of the Academic Council and helping our chapter to better the professional lives and working conditions of our colleagues at Stony Brook.
