Republican Platform Seeks to Weaken Power of Unions

Platform Calls for Getting Rid of Teacher Tenure

The Republican Platform calls for numerous steps that could significantly weaken America’s labor unions — public-sector and private-sector ones — and help speed organized labor’s overall decline.

The platform states, “Rigid tenure systems based on the ‘last in-first-out’ policy should be replaced with a merit-based approach that can attract fresh talent and dedication in the classroom” (p.36).

How Universities Treat Adjuncts Limits their Effectiveness in the Classroom, Report Says

Days after the passing of UUP member Stephen Street, the Campaign for the Future of Higher Education releases a report on a survey of contingent faculty. Street was the report’s lead author:

Colleges that want to set the stage for their students to succeed should stop hiring adjunct professors at the last minute and then denying those instructors access to the technology and resources they need to teach effectively, a new report suggests.

“The ‘just in time’ staffing model is unjust for faculty and for students and clearly compromises education quality,” says the 26-page policy report from the Center for the Future of Higher Education, a virtual think tank of the Campaign for the Future of Higher Education.

Stephen M. Street, Prominent Advocate for Adjunct Faculty, Dies of Cancer

Stephen Street of Buffalo State passes away at the age of 56

Stephen M. Street, 1955-2012

Mr. Street had taught writing and literature off the tenure track since 1980, and had been active in the Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor, the New Faculty Majority, and the United University Professions, a union that represents academic employees at the State University of New York. His essays for The Chronicle often expressed the frustrations he and other adjunct faculty members felt in seeking decent pay and benefits and equitable treatment from their employers.
