Your UUP ESC chapter executive board would like to invite you to participate with us in one or more of the activities of our “All-Chapter” meeting, on Monday, March 24, Tuesday, March 25 and Wednesday March 26, 2008, immediately preceding the upcoming ESC All-College meeting. Monday and Tuesday activities will be scheduled at the NYSUT Building in Latham, NY, and Wednesday activities will be scheduled at the Saratoga Hotel in Saratoga Springs, NY, the same location where the All-College meeting will take place.

For any chapter members wishing to attend any of these activities, the chapter will provide meals as scheduled, and will of course cover all travel and overnight lodging expenses, in accordance with UUP expense reimbursement policy.

Let her know which of the chapter activities you would like to participate in. Also, please let her know whether or not you will need overnight lodging – lodging requests MUST be received by Monday, March 17. Again, the chapter will cover all meal and lodging arrangements for you, and we will truly welcome and value your participation in this valuable work of your chapter.

Chapter Executive Board Meeting

The chapter executive board will meet on Monday, March 24, starting with lunch at 12:00 PM. Chapter executive board meetings are always open to any chapter member, and we would welcome your sitting in and participating in any or all of our discussions.

 

 

Tuesday March 25 – NYSUT Building, Latham, NY

 

Symposium on new Procedures for Evaluation of Academic Faculty
10:30 AM – 4:00 PM

Join us for a discussion of issues and concerns raised by faculty as the new negotiated procedures for faculty personnel review are implemented at Empire State College. The intent of this symposium is to determine if there are parts of the new procedures that should be addressed and possibly revised through further negotiations with ESC management. A planning committee of four faculty members is currently working out a structure and agenda for the day.

 

 

Wednesday March 26 – Saratoga Hotel, Saratoga Springs, NY

 

Workshop 1: Workload and Professional Obligation
8:30 AM – 9:30 AM

In this workshop, we will consider methods to manage current assignment levels through better use of Center Resource/Planning committees, the mandated annual report and plan for faculty, improvements in performance programs for professionals, and other methods and strategies. For full-time academic and professional employees, we will discuss the meaning of a full professional obligation and the processes to expect and obtain extra compensation or compensatory time for work assigned by management over and above a full obligation. For part-time academic employees we will discuss the meaning of a partial professional obligation, and review the processes to expect and obtain a new updated appointment letter covering existing and added responsibilities and compensation for all work assigned by management. We will try to develop recommendations on workload issues for our chapter leaders to take to discussions with ESC management.

 

Workshop 2: UUP Member Benefits 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM

This presentation from the UUP Benefit Trust Fund office will focus on a discussion of your health benefits through the Empire Plan, including recent changes and enhancements; your benefits through the UUP Benefit Trust Fund, including dental, vision, and life insurance; and other discounted services to which you have access such as Apple, AT&T Wireless, Bally Total Fitness, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Goodyear, Green Mountain Coffee, Liberty Mutual - Auto/Home, Marabito Fuel, NJ Nets, Office Max, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless.

  Workshop 3: Your Contract – How UUP Works 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Do you know what is (and isn't) in your collective bargaining agreement – the Agreement between United University Professions and the State of New York? Do you know its internal organization, and the kinds of processes and procedures it contains? The answer to these and other questions will be discussed and analyzed in this workshop by Maureen Seidel, NYSUT Labor Relations Specialist for Empire State College.

  Workshop 4: Thinking and Planning for Retirement 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Retirement is both an exciting and a stressful life-changing event. The best way to face this challenge is to arm yourself with information in advance of that date. UUP has a pre-retirement presentation that will walk you through the process of retirement, with an overview that illustrates how to continue your New York State Health Insurance in retirement and how to calculate your sick leave credit, and provides advice on what you need to do to provide benefits for your survivors and beneficiaries. You will also learn how to continue your dental and vision benefits in retirement, and to consider the many advantages of continuing your UUP membership as a retiree. Please join Anne Marine, UUP Retiree Member Services Coordinator for this informative seminar.

Lunch 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM

For all ESC UUP Chapter members who will be attending the All-College meeting: If you don’t already have plans for lunch on Wednesday March 26 before the start of the meeting, please join us from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM for lunch at the Saratoga hotel provided by our UUP ESC chapter. So that we’ll have a better idea of how many places to set, please be sure to contact our chapter assistant, Liza Alamo (Liza Alamo@esc.edu or 914-948-6206 ext. 3589) and let her know that you’ll be joining us. Chapter meeting 8:30 PM This is our regularly scheduled meeting for all members of the UUP ESC Chapter who are in attendance at the ESC All-College meeting. The assigned room will be found in the ESC All-College meeting schedule.

Hospitality Suite 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM  

Your UUP ESC chapter will have a hospitality suite in the Saratoga hotel all day Thursday, March 27. A representative of the UUP Benefits Trust fund will be available, as well as members of our chapter executive board. Stop in at any time during the day for a refreshment break, or to speak with us about any UUP-related issue or concern.
