UUP Binghamton Endorses Statement of Support for Occupy Wall Street Movement
At its meeting of December 7, 2011, the Executive Board of UUP Binghamton endorsed the statewide Executive Board"s statement of support for the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) Movement. The statement draws parallels between issues raised by OWS and those raised by UUP regarding higher education.
For example, the growing wealth gap between the rich and the public parallels the growing gap between those who can afford college and those who cannot; the failure of the very rich to pay a proportionate share of taxes parallels the failure of state and local governments to support higher education; and the issues related to freedom of assembly and speech faced by OWS parallel the same issues faced by academics in higher education. The statement calls upon UUP members to stand in solidarity with OWS.
